Resumes and Cover Letters:

A resume and cover letter is your own personal marketing tool.  Your resume and cover letter should contain no spelling or grammatical errors.  Why?  It is not so much that you spelled a word incorrectly, but the reader mayassume you are careless or sloppy - in short, not the person for their job.

Probably the biggest thing to remember about your resume is that its purpose is to get you an interview.  Below are some Do's and Do Not's when it comes to your resume.

Below are some links that are helpful when creating a resume or cover letter.  Look specifically at the phrasing and the words.  There are certain words, depending on your industry, that draw recruiters to your resume.  Identify them and your chances of getting a job interview increase.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Question: What should I do if I don't have a resume?

Answer: Before creating a resume, review resumes of people that have similar backgrounds.  For example, if you are applying for a nuclear engineering position, you should not review a resume of a doctor.  Puregreenjobs.com also has an easy to use template.  Just fill in the boxes and we will create a resume for you.

Question: How do you customize a resume?

Answer: Carefully read the job description before customizing your resume.  If you have experience with the the job requirements, make sure those experiences are at the top of your resume.  If your resume has a summary, highlight your most notable qualifications  (HINT: These should be the job requirements).  Don't be shy, this is your chance to brag about yourself!

Question: Do I really need a cover letter?

Answer: Yes.  In short, a cover letter shows the interviewer that you can write a gramatically correct sentence.  A cover letter should tell the interviewer why you want the job and what qualities you will bring to a job.  A resume shows how your previous position(s) qualify you for the job.

Question: How long should a cover letter be?

Answer: Opening paragraph (general information about the job you are applying for); 1-2 middle paragraphs (How your experience make you a good candidate for the job); Concluding paragraph.
